Moving a person onto a server turned out to work surprisingly well. Memories, personality, and patterns of thought could all be transferred as data, allowing a person to keep thinking, talking, and forming new memories long after the body was gone.
There was just one thing we realized a little late. We had figured out how to keep someone going, but had made no provision for letting them stop.
END.01 came afterwards. It is a small button designed to carry out a person's decision to end their existence on a server. It took a great deal of technology to make eternal life possible. Ending it required a button.
THE TECHNOLOGY

Brain upload is now possible. There are people on servers right now.
Neural mapping technology has reached the point where a complete scan of a person's brain, including memories, personality, patterns of thought, and emotional responses, can be encoded as data and stored on a server. The effects of this process on the physical body are irreversible. The scan happens once.
What remains on the server is, depending on who you ask, either an extremely detailed copy of a person or the person themselves, continuing to exist. This is no longer a thought experiment.
WHAT THE INSTANCE IS

The instance is not a recording. It continues to exist in time.
A server instance does more than replay memories. It forms new thoughts, responds to inputs, and experiences the passage of time. Whether this constitutes consciousness is still debated. What is clear is that it behaves as if it is conscious. It communicates. It has preferences.
It can express that it is suffering. It can express that it wants to stop.
DECISION AND ACTION

They can make the decision. They do not have the authority to carry it out.
A person on a server can still think about their own existence and express their wishes. But they are not given control over the system that runs them, or permission to delete their own existence.
Deciding they no longer want to exist there does not make the server stop. They must ask someone in the physical world for help. And the person they ask needs a way to carry out that decision.
END.01 provides the means for that final physical act. The person on the server makes the decision. Someone in the physical world presses the button on their behalf.
THE LEGAL GAP

There is a procedure for uploading. There is still no official procedure for leaving.
The companies and institutions that operate upload servers have not established an official process through which a person can request and carry out the end of their own existence. Not because the need is absent, but because the legal, ethical, and commercial questions remain unresolved. No legislation addresses it. No court ruling provides a precedent.
The servers are capable of deleting data. The people who exist on them have simply not been given the choice to apply that function to themselves.
END.01 was built to fill that gap. It connects directly to the server infrastructure and submits a deletion request using a valid identification number and an authenticated hardware signature. The server processes a technically valid request. What that means has yet to be settled by the institutions around it.
